Before the Stardom: The Fascinating Pre-Debut Story of Song Kang
Long before he earned the title of the “Son of Netflix” and captured hearts worldwide in hits like Sweet Home, Nevertheless, and My Demon, Song Kang was just a quiet, unassuming young man trying to figure out his path.
While his striking visuals and towering 1.86m frame might make it seem like he was destined for the spotlight from birth, his pre-debut journey was filled with unexpected twists, ordinary struggles, and a surprising near-miss with the K-pop industry.
1. A Childhood Rooted in Arts and Athletics
Born on April 23, 1994, in Suwon, South Korea, Song Kang grew up in a household that naturally blended physical discipline with artistic expression. His father was an artistic gymnast, while his mother worked as a piano teacher.
Despite growing up surrounded by active influences and art, young Song Kang didn’t immediately dream of acting. In fact, inspired by pictures he saw growing up, his childhood ambition was to become an architect or a furniture designer. However, he eventually abandoned the dream simply because he had “no idea where to start”.
2. The Movie Moment That Changed Everything
Like many actors, Song Kang found his ultimate calling on the silver screen. His inspiration to enter the entertainment industry sparked after watching Leonardo DiCaprio in the iconic 1997 epic Titanic. Captivated by the sheer emotional depth and presence of DiCaprio, a young Song Kang began harboring a quiet aspiration to evoke those same powerful feelings in an audience.
3. Turning Down the K-Pop Idol Track
Given his elite visual proportions, it comes as no surprise that talent scouts took notice early on. Before his official acting debut, Song Kang was frequently scouted by K-pop idol agencies offering him the chance to train and debut as a singer.
However, he turned them all down. True to his humble and candid nature, Song Kang later admitted a very practical reason for declining: “I can’t sing or dance”. Rather than forcing a path into music, his heart remained firmly set on pursuing a career in film and television.
4. Overcoming Shyness and Family Skepticism
Transitioning into acting wasn’t an overnight success story. By his own admission, Song Kang was naturally extremely introverted and shy during his school years. When he first told his mother about his ambition to act, she was skeptical, advising him, “Acting? You’re so introverted. Just learn a trade instead”.
Fortunately, his father offered supportive encouragement, telling him that if it was something he truly liked, he should go for it. Encouraged, Song Kang enrolled in acting classes—though his early days were riddled with stage fright. He famously recalled how embarrassed he felt having to act in front of other students, often breaking out into nervous laughter and questioning whether he was cut out for the profession.
To ground himself during his early university days at Konkuk University’s Department of Film Arts—where he lived alone in Seoul for the first time—he began writing daily diaries to process his loneliness, critique his acting shortcomings, and build his self-esteem.
The Breakthrough
All of Song Kang’s persistence, journaling, and quiet determination ultimately paid off. In late 2016, he signed with Namoo Actors, and he officially made his small-screen debut in the 2017 tvN romantic comedy The Liar and His Lover. Just a couple of years later, he beat out roughly 900 other applicants to land his star-making role in Netflix’s Love Alarm, launching a meteoric rise that proves his decision to follow his passion was right all along.
