Before he earned the global moniker “Son of Netflix” and captured hearts in megahit K-dramas like Sweet Home, Nevertheless, and My Demon, actor Song Kang had a quiet, artistic upbringing far removed from the glaring lights of the entertainment industry. Exploring his pre-debut era reveals a path defined by artistic roots, a near-miss with the K-pop idol system, and a profound cinematic awakening that ultimately shaped one of South Korea’s biggest television stars.
A Household Steeped in Arts and Athletics
Born on April 23, 1994, in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, Song Kang grew up in an environment naturally inclined toward discipline and expression. His father was an artistic gymnast—instilling an early appreciation for physical movement, health, and fitness—while his mother worked as a piano teacher.
Surrounded by this blend of physical rigor and musicality, young Song Kang spent his formative years exploring various hobbies. Long before he ever memorized a drama script, he built a strong foundation in physical coordination, playing sports and learning kendo. This athletic background would later pay off unexpectedly in his acting career, notably when he trained rigorously to play a ballet dancer in the drama Navillera.
Rejecting the K-Pop Trajectory
As his striking visual features and tall frame became more apparent during his youth, the entertainment industry naturally came knocking. During his high school and university years—where he chose to study Film Arts at the prestigious Konkuk University—Song Kang was scouted multiple times by K-pop entertainment agencies.
In the hyper-competitive world of Korean entertainment, being cast by idol scouts is often a golden ticket to training camps and eventual boy-band debuts. However, Song Kang turned them down repeatedly. He realized early on that his true passion did not lie in singing and dancing on stage as an idol.
“I’m not good at singing or dancing,” Song Kang later candidly shared in interviews, reflecting on his decision to pass up early idol offers to focus entirely on the silver screen.
The Leonardo DiCaprio Spark
What catalyzed Song Kang’s absolute resolve to become an actor was cinematic rather than local: watching Hollywood icon Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic. Struck by the profound emotional depth and raw expression DiCaprio projected on screen, Song Kang decided that acting was the only career path for him.
He dedicated himself entirely to his craft, immersing himself in film studies and training rigorously in university. Transitioning from an aspiring student to a working actor wasn’t an overnight journey, though. He faced early hurdles, recalling how he used to struggle with shyness when performing in front of other students at acting academies. Through persistence and a refusal to give up, he pushed past his self-doubt.
Stepping Into the Spotlight
His first official steps into the public eye came in early 2017, right before his official small-screen acting debut, when he appeared as a fresh face in music videos such as The Ade’s “Sweet Summer Night” and Suran’s “Love Story”.
Shortly after, in March 2017, he officially landed his first supporting role in the tvN romantic comedy series The Liar and His Lover, playing the sweet, music-loving childhood friend Baek Jin-woo. Though small, this role marked the official beginning of the career that would eventually skyrocket him to global stardom.
