The Blocks, the Bureaucracy, and the Cold War: Unraveling the Plot of the Tetris Movie

When people hear the word Tetris, they usually picture falling geometric blocks, frantic clearing of lines, and the iconic, upbeat Russian folk tune humming in the background. However, the 2023 biographical political thriller Tetris, directed by Jon S. Baird and starring Taron Egerton, shifts the focus entirely away from the arcade screen and onto a high-stakes, real-world game of international corporate espionage.

Rather than a cozy gaming documentary, the film plays out like a classic Cold War spy thriller, tracking how one of the world’s most ubiquitous video games survived a labyrinth of bureaucratic corruption, greedy publishing tycoons, and Soviet oversight.

1. The Spark: Henk Rogers Discovers the Game

The story begins in the late 1980s in Tokyo, where Dutch-American video game designer and entrepreneur Henk Rogers (played by Taron Egerton) runs Bullet-Proof Software. While attending a trade show, Henk stumbles upon a primitive computer version of Tetris.

Instantly hypnotized by its addictive simplicity, Henk recognizes that this puzzle game has universal commercial potential. He mortgages his home and risks everything he owns to secure the Japanese console and computer rights, setting off a chain reaction that will draw the attention of international giants.

2. A Tangled Web of Corporate Rivalry

The central tension of the film stems from the deeply fragmented and confusing state of the game’s licensing rights. Because Tetris was created by programmer Alexey Pajitnov inside the Soviet Academy of Sciences, it technically belongs to the USSR state. Under Soviet law at the time, private ownership of intellectual property did not exist.

Meanwhile, a crooked media magnate named Robert Maxwell and his ambitious son Kevin (representing Mirrorsoft) are aggressively buying up and double-crossing their way into global rights across different territories. At the same time, gaming giant Nintendo enters the picture, eyeing the game as the ultimate killer app for their upcoming secret weapon: a portable handheld device called the Game Boy.

3. Behind the Iron Curtain: Journey to Moscow

Desperate to nail down handheld console rights directly from the source, Henk boards a plane to Moscow. Stepping into the Soviet Union plunges him straight into a paranoid world of surveillance, KGB agents, and ELORG—the state agency tasked with handling software licensing.

During his trip, Henk finally meets the game’s brilliant creator, Alexey Pajitnov (played by Nikita Efremov). Despite initial language barriers and deep-seated suspicion under a watchful totalitarian regime, the two men form a genuine, deep friendship. Henk helps Alexey understand how the free market works, while Alexey helps Henk navigate the dangerous minefield of Soviet bureaucracy.

4. The Climax: Fraud, Freedom, and Flight

As the battle for Tetris reaches a fever pitch, multiple factions converge on Moscow to sign exclusive contracts with ELORG officials.

  • The Standoff: The Maxwell family attempts to bully and bribe their way into total control, leveraging political pressure.
  • The Revelation: Henk discovers that the Maxwells are financially insolvent and cannot actually pay for the rights they are promising. He exposes their deception to ELORG negotiators.
  • The Deal: Impressed by Henk’s integrity and his commitment to Nintendo’s vision (pairing the game with the Game Boy launch), ELORG officially awards the handheld rights to Nintendo.

Realizing that corrupt officials and vengeful rivals are turning hostile, Henk, Alexey, and their allies must orchestrate a nail-biting escape out of the Soviet Union just as the political landscape of Eastern Europe begins to fracture.

5. Epilogue and Legacy

The movie concludes on an uplifting, historical note. With the eventual collapse of the Soviet Union, Alexey Pajitnov is finally able to emigrate to the United States, where he reunites with Henk Rogers.

The two friends establish The Tetris Company, securing Alexey’s rightful ownership, recognition, and long-overdue royalties for his legendary creation. Backed by the success of the Game Boy, Tetris goes on to sell hundreds of millions of copies worldwide, cementing its place as an immortal piece of pop culture history.
