Johannes Pietsch: The Pop-Opera Phenom Who Made Eurovision History

Blending the disciplined heights of classical opera with the high-energy pulse of contemporary pop, Johannes Pietsch—professionally known by his stage name JJ—has quickly risen to become one of Austria’s most dynamic modern music artists. Bursting onto the international scene with a historic victory at the Eurovision Song Contest, Pietsch has captivated audiences with his extraordinary vocal range and cross-cultural background.

Early Life and Global Roots

Born on April 29, 2001, in Vienna, Austria, Pietsch possesses a rich multicultural heritage, born to an Austrian father and a Filipino mother. While he was born in Vienna, he spent the majority of his childhood growing up in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

This diverse background deeply influenced his musical awakening. In Dubai, he was introduced to pop music through lively family karaoke sessions, while his father cultivated his appreciation for classical opera. These dual inspirations laid the foundation for his signature pop-opera style. In 2016, Pietsch and his family returned to Vienna, where he immersed himself further in formal vocal training. He attended the prestigious opera school of the Vienna State Opera and later advanced his studies at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna. Multilingual by nature, he speaks German, English, and Tagalog.

From Reality Television to the Stage

Before claiming international fame, Pietsch cut his teeth in the competitive world of televised singing contests:

  • The Voice UK (2020): After narrowly missing the application deadline for The Voice of Germany, Pietsch successfully auditioned for the ninth series of The Voice UK, where he advanced to the Knockout rounds under the mentorship of will.i.am.
  • Starmania (2021): The following year, he competed in the fifth season of the popular Austrian television show Starmania, reaching the first final show.

These formative television appearances helped build his stage presence, preparing him for the massive global spotlight that awaited him.

The Eurovision 2025 Triumph

Pietsch’s career reached a monumental turning point on January 30, 2025, when the Austrian broadcaster ORF announced him as the country’s representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2025.

He performed “Wasted Love,” a track he co-wrote alongside Austrian 2023 representative Teodora Špirić and producer Thomas Thurner. On May 17, 2025, Pietsch triumphed in the Grand Final, racking up a total of 436 points (258 from the professional jury and 178 from the public televote).

His victory broke multiple records:

  • He became the first solo Eurovision winner born in the 21st century.
  • He made history as the first Eurovision champion of Southeast Asian descent.

Musical Style and Continued Success

As a sopranist—utilizing the soprano range of a countertenor—Pietsch delivers performances characterized by soaring high notes and intense emotional depth. His unique fusion of operatic theatrics and mainstream pop hooks sets him apart in the contemporary European music landscape.

Following his Eurovision victory, Pietsch’s momentum has only accelerated:

  • In December 2025, he won two fan-voted Eurovision Awards for Outstanding Vocals and Album Cover of the Year (for his collaborative mashup with Conchita Wurst).
  • He released an EP in May 2026 under Manifester Music and Warner Germany.
  • He embarked on his 2026 promotional and headline concert series, including Act I: The Introduction and the Act II: Into The Unknown Tour.

Outside of music, Pietsch has openly identified as queer, expressing a desire to act as a vocal advocate for the LGBTQ+ community in Austria. With a rapidly expanding global fanbase and a boundary-pushing sound, Johannes Pietsch continues to carve out a distinct and trailblazing path in modern pop.
